Dominican Republic Missions Trip Update - Day 4
UPDATE: The phone is now working. We had to use SKYPE on my computer last night with a headset to get those calls in. That's why they were quicker than normal, today they can call longer since it's working again.
Hey everyone! We had another great day in the DR. This morning we had our devotions in Ephesians 3 with Mike Ducane leading them. We've enjoyed starting each day with some praise songs and time in the Word focusing our hearts. Tomorrow our missionary guide Wilkins will lead us in devotions!
This morning we went to JUMBO (a Walmart) and we bought groceries for families of the sugarcane village. Praise the Lord we were able to feed 117 families! Last year we fed 17 families - amazing how God has provided this year for this great blessing. We fed the entire village! Normally some families don't get the food because there are too many, but thanks to the grace of God we were able to get them all food that would last for about 5 days for their whole family. Good stuff! The students picked out the food at the store with us. We also were able to buy about 60 pairs of pants and lots of diapers that the Handicap Orphanage requested. We treated ourselves to a Magnum bar while we were waiting to checkout.
We headed to the village and when we got there we spent time playing with the kids as our missionary guide, Wilkins, passed out tickets numbered 1 - 117 to the village families. We had lots of fun with the kids. Once we were ready we packed the church building with all 117 ticket holders and Wilkens shared the Gospel with them and the importance of a relationship with God over the blessing of getting food. Then the students sang a Spanish worship song to the people. The kids were loud and proud (of their God) as they sang.
Wilkins began to call out the numbers of the tickets and the students took turns handing a full grocery bag of food to each family. It took forever (thats a good thing!) The church was an oven, but we were glad to be there blessing that community in Jesus name. Everyone was very thankful.
We headed back to SCORE a bit late for lunch and relaxed a bit in the pool. Afterwards we headed to the handicap orphanage to drop off our donations that we bought at Jumbo. Next we went to Jackies House - a great orphanage of boys and girls whose parents are prostitutes. These kids were taken in by...Jackie and receive a Christian education and lots of love. The staff here was great - very very loving with the little children. We painted their faces and made them balloon animals before ending in some worship. We were able to bless them with a financial donation as we left too. The kids were so cute.
We headed back to SCORE for a quick dinner before heading to the beach. We had told the boys that we met at the beach the night before (and a year earlier too) to meet us back there at 7:30pm for a surprise. 9 boys showed up and we talked to them about God and His love. Then we brought out tons of baseball equipment that Emma's softball team donated to us to bring over. They were so blessed to get brand new baseballs, gloves, bases, catchers stuff, and bats. We gave them tons of stuff. They loved it and it was a great chance to talk with them about God.
We are now ending the night with some fun in the pool, and a Bible study on the topic of "What Does God Want". Please pray for some of our team members who aren't feeling well: Allie Mancuso (fever), Julia Sizemore (Swimmers Ear). We took them to a clinic nearby and they are resting. Pray they feel better in the morning.

Becky & Tina-I love you girls! Keep doing God's work! I am so proud of your efforts. Say a word of thanks to your group leaders...they deserve it! All my Love,
Aunt Melissa
PS--I sure hope you guys didn't feed those families any junk food! (ie sugary cereals, bags of chips, soft drinks, etc...) I pray that the focus was on wholesome foods like cans of fruit, veggies, bread, eggs, milk, rice, beans, etc... You'll want to feed them foods that nourish mind, body & spirit!
